Islam’s third holiest site, Masjid al-Aqsa in Palestine was transformed into a deadly battle zone after Israeli occupation forces stormed the masjid and rained down sound bombs, tear gas and rubber bullets on worshippers.

Worshippers were performing the Taraweeh salaah on Friday night, the 26th night of Ramadan in Palestine when soldiers stormed the holy place.

At least two hundred and five musallees including children were injured in the attack.

Rubble was strewn across the affected areas of the Masjid while paramedics were seen scurrying to assist the injured.

Researcher Dr Abdallah Marouf says Israeli soldiers also attacked Palestinians while they were breaking their fast.

“They started the attack during the ifthar. The Israeli’s started to attack, they are just trying to drag all the people out of Al-Aqsa mosque and let the Al-Aqsa mosque be empty in order to prepare it for the Israeli fanatics to attack the Al-Aqsa mosque and break in to the mosque on the 28th of Ramadan. So they are trying to attack everybody including even the press.”

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Palestine Information Networks (PIN)Hafez Ebrahim Moosa says the situation is volatile but remain calm for the moment.

“A sense of calm restored to Masjid Al-Aqsa. Significant numbers, Palestinian chanting, reciting the takbeer, cleanup operations at Masjid Al-Aqsa thereafter. But there’s still a dark cloud hanging over all of this whether Palestinians are going to be allowed in large numbers to come for the 27th night of Ramadan and whether there’s going to be that massive promised incursion by the settlers tomorrow morning.”

Hafez Moosa says Israeli forces also stormed the sound room at Masjid al-Aqsa and disconnected the wires for speakers such that announcements from the Qibli Musallah do not reach other parts of the Masjid.

Hefez Moosa says the situation is also volatile in the Old City and Sheikh Jarrah as well where Israeli forces are restricting entry to the Old City to residents.
