Esteemed Islamic scholar and secretary general of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa or council of Muslim Theologians Ml Ebrahim Bham says the holy month of Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting.
Ml Bham was speaking to 702’s Azania Mosaka on Wednesday as part of the radio station’s master class segment to educate non-Muslim listeners about the blessed month of Ramadan, its benefits and rewards.
The master class was inspired by an email from a 702 listener who has Muslim colleagues and wanted to know more about Islam and the holy month of Ramadan.
Ml Bham says the word Ramadan means the heat that scorches the earth.
“We believe two things, it scorches the earth or is scorches the person when he feels the thirst, so there is a scorching of the throat in experiencing the thirst or from a spiritual perspective, it scorches away the sins which the Almighty wipes and forgives when a person undergoes the challenge and the effort of keeping fast.”
Ml Bham says the day of Eid-ul-Fitr culminates the ending of the blessed month of Ramadan.
“Eid has it’s most beautiful type of celebration and more than a celebration, it supposed to be a thanksgiving and a thanks to the Almighty that he gave us the opportunity to be able to fulfill a command. So there is happiness in fulfilling that command of the Almighty.”
Ml Bham says Allah mentions in the Qur’an that he made fasting compulsory so that you gain a consciousness of the Almighty and attain a level of awareness that creates a desire to mold our existence in accordance with that consciousness that the Almighty is with you at all times.
