A 36-year-old man arrested for the murder of Naadira Vanker has told the Lenasia Magistrates Court that he does not intend applying for bail.

Lucky Mshubi, from Phumlamqashi near Lenasia South appeared in the dock on charges of murder, housebreaking with intent to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

Mshubi was arrested after Naadira’s body was found on Wednesday in a shallow grave in a yard at Phumlamqashi.

The 31-year-old Naadira was reported missing on 22 April after she was abducted from her flat in Lenasia South.

In a statement to Radio Islam, the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Phindi Mjonondwane says Mshubi has opted to conduct his own defence when he reappears in court.

“The state alleges that Mshubi planned the offences that resulted in the death of Vanker and upon realising that she was dead, Mshubi then dug a grave and buried her. The cause of death is yet to be determined. Mshubi will remain in custody.”

The matter was postponed to 26 June 2021 for further investigations.

Mjonondwane says the investigations in this matter are ongoing and are prosecutorial guided adding that the NPA will not comment on any matter related to investigations or merits of the case.
