Dr Fowzia Siddiqui, the sister of Aafia Siddiqui has dispelled rumours that she has passed way.
In an audio clip to Radio Islam’s Ejaz Khan, Dr Fowzia says fake news about Aafia’s death has been circulating like “wildfire” on social media without anybody verifying whether it was true or not.
Pakistani neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui has been languishing in a prison medical centre in the US state of Texas for the past 18-years
She was arrested in Afghanistan in 2008 and flown to the United States, where she was sentenced to 86 years in prison for the attempted murder of two US soldiers.
Dr Fowzia says it’s been a very painful three days for her family.
“We do know that she is alive from the prison website and from our lawyers contacting the prison. No one has been able to meet with Aafia and I am in touch and requesting Aafia’s health status which the prison is not sharing due to what they are calling some [hyper] regulation.”
Dr Fowzia has urged people to stop spreading fake news about Aafia’s passing.
“I can also say that whoever has spread this nasty rumour, it’s very cruel and for anyone to forward something without confirmation is just as cruel and just as painful.”
Earlier this month, senior Pakistani journalist Rahimullah Yusufzai told Radio Islam there is no clear and visible efforts by the Pakistani government to secure the release of Aafia
