The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has announced the launch of a new Med Safety mobile app to make reporting side effects from medication and vaccines including COVID-19 vaccines much easier.

The Med Safety app was developed by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as part of the  WEB-Recognising Adverse Drug Reactions (WEB-RADR) project.

SAHPRA CEO Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela says launch of the Med Safety app is part of the company’s strategy to promote pharmacovigilance in South Africa.

“The application has been designed from the outset to incorporate multi-regional use. The Med Safety app provides a number of benefits, it facilitates reporting of adverse drug reactions by the public and healthcare practitioners.”

Makokotlela says the app can also be used by the regulatory authority to provide real-time safety information to users.

“This functionality serves to provide feedback to the users. Users are able to create a ‘watchlist’ which enable them to view safety information on products of interest. The user can change the language setting within the app.”

Makokotlela says the app is available for iOS and Android devices.
