North West Professor and political analyst Andre Duvenhage says leaked information has revealed that the African National Congress (ANC) will be crippled if Secretary General Ace Magashule is ousted from the party.
Duvenhage was speaking to Radio Islam about the ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting on Sunday to deal with burning issues, including the COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan, local government elections and Magasghule
The party’s is expected resume its NEC meeting on Monday evening after its three-day meeting ended in the early hours of Monday morning due to fierce debates over the ANC’s 2017 resolution for those facing charges to step aside.
Duvenhage says Magashule has a huge support base and this might compromise the ANC if Magashule leaves the party.
“I understand from sources and I must tell we don’t have formal information, it’s only leaked information. We have at the moment is that, if they are going to take out Ace Magashule, a lot of people will resign from the ANC and this will cripple the ANC in a very serious way.”
Duvenhage says it will be interesting to see the outcome of the NEC meeting.
“There are rumours in the media, although I think it’s not 100% correct that argue that Johan Rupert has put pressure on Cyril Ramaphosa to get rid of Ace Magashule. The next week or two is going to be very decisive when it comes to the future of the ANC and the future of leadership within the ANC.”
Duvenhage says there may be a cabinet reshuffle on the cards as Ramaphosa battles the internal ANC factions within the party.
“It was mentioned now for the last few months. We are picking it up and I think it’s a question of timing for the president.”
Duvenhage says former President Jacob Zuma who was not involved in the NEC meeting is keeping a low profile because he is at the core of the whole problem and centre of discussion.
