A research associate at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad says Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s remarks about ‘burying past with India’ is an extremely important and powerful statement.

Muhammad Taimur Fahad Khan was speaking to Radio Islam on Tuesday about Bajwa’s remarks during a session of the first-ever Islamabad Security Dialogue.

Bajwa also said that the potential for regional peace and development always remained hostage to the disputes and issues between Pakistan and India, the two “nuclear-armed neighbours”.

Fahad Khan says the remarks by Bajwa is a reiteration of a longstanding Pakistani policy.

“Pakistan has been again and again reiterating and sending signals and messages to India that it is will to have a peaceful neighbourhood with neighbouring countries. So it is just a reiteration and another gesture of peace toward its eastern neighbour that Pakistan is willing to improve relations with its arch rival India.

Fahad Khan says India may also be considering ending hostilities and working towards peace with Pakistan.

“I think on March 18, there was a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs that India is also desirous of normal and neighbourly relations with Pakistan. So I think India is also slowly and gradually reciprocating the peace gestures that are being made by Pakistan. They are giving positive signals.”

Commenting on the Jammu and Kashmir conflict, Fahad Khan says India has to make certain compromises and concessions in order to “break the ice” with Pakistan adding that the US has very significant role to play in subcontinental issues.
