Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter has warned South Africans that they face another five years of load shedding.

De Ruyter was presenting the status of the power utility on Monday.

The power utility is currently implementing stage two load shedding which is expected to continue until about Wednesday.

De Ruyter says Eskom will have a shortfall in electricity supply.

“We have to reiterate that there will be a shortfall in the supply of electricity of approximately 4 000 megawatts over the next five years, as President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in his State of the Nation address.”

De Ruyter says capacity challenges will remain as one the challenges Eskom has to grapple with in South Africa.

“Most of our power stations are reaching the end of their useful lives having had a hard life and being operated for extended period of time well above the international utilization factors. This is further compounded by deferred maintenance and results in our power stations being not reliable and not predictable.”

De Ruyter says Eskom welcomed the announcement by Ramaphosa, which will include the request for a proposal for 2,600 megawatts from wind and solar energy.
