March 13, 2021

At least 8 people were killed, and 48 others injured a car bomb explosion in Afghanistan’s western Herat province bordering Iran. According to Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry, the explosives that caused the blast were hidden in the passenger bus. The incident occurred at about 9pm on Friday evening in Herat city.

Anadolu Agency reports that a probe has been launched into the attack in  which mostly civilians, including women and children were killed. The explosion also destroyed 14 houses.

The attack occurred as the United Nations Security Council called for an immediate end to targeted assassinations in war-ravaged country Afghanistan.

Anadolu Agency reports that the UNSC stressed that all parties to the Afghan conflict must respect obligations under international humanitarian law in under all circumstances. These include those related to the protection of civilians. The UNSC said in a statement that sustainable peace can be achieved only through a comprehensive and inclusive Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process.

Meanwhile, there has been no claim of responsibility for Friday’s attack.
