The African Farmers’ Organisation of South Africa (AFASA) says it is concerned about the way government is dealing with land reform.
This comes after at least one black farmer, Ivan Cloete was kicked off the Colenso farm in Darling, his third state farm to be taken away by the authorities.
It is believed that a delegation of high-level officials in Agriculture Land Reform and rural development department arrived on the farm and notified him that his lease was terminated and that a MK veteran will now be the new preferred tenant.
Speaking to Radio Islam, AFASA’s Ismail Motala says they have advised Cloete not to move off the land.
“We are collating information and since we have public gone out about the Ivan Cloete matter, there are people that are coming to the fore and saying we are also being threatened, we are also being told that we have to move off. This matter of bringing MK veterans as partners is something that is happening not from now, it’s been happening from the time that former Minister Nkwinti was in office.”
Motala says the claiming of the farm has nothing to do with expropriation.
“This is not what government is talking about, government is talking about expropriation. This is an extreme method of corruption that exits within the department.”
Motala says the expropriation is system is flawed because there are no “checks and balances”.
