CapeNature’s Petro van Rhyn says trap cages with bait have been set up along the Breede River to recapture crocodiles that escaped from a breeding farm outside Bonnievale.

Van Rhyn was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about the escape of the crocodiles through a wired fence on Wednesday morning.

Van Rhyn says in total, 27 crocodiles have been recaptured after they escaped.

“CapeNature has put out  some very human cages with bait in it. Apparently they love chicken, so there’s some chicken in there for them to lure them to these cages and we also do night patrols on the river.”

Van Rhyn says the crocodiles escape has created fear and frenzy.

“They don’t really pose a real threat, although we want to get them before they do reach eight meters just so the public feel safe. We have communicated with the community in that area to take care of young children so that they don’t go and swim there. I think they might be the easiest prey if the crocodiles are not fed enough fish and frogs.”

She says it is unclear how many reptiles have escaped as the breeding farm has thousands of crocodiles at its facility.

Van Rhyn has urged the public not to approach the crocodiles but rather call the Bonnievale Police Station if the reptiles are sighted.
