The Congress of the People (COPE) has called on Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize to add all journalists to the list of frontline workers.

Cope’s Dennis Bloem was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday following the passing of veteran journalist and broadcaster Karima Brown from COVID-19 related complications.

Brown had been in hospital on a ventilator fighting the virus which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives across the globe.

Bloem has described Brown as a brave, strong and courageous journalist who did her work without fear or favour.

“We know that journalists are all the time exposed to this dangerous virus. It is very important that we must also look after our journalists. We can’t lose journalists day by day, they are doing a very dangerous job.”

Bloem says the country has lost a brave journalist.

“It is very sad to lose a journalist like Karima Brown who did not fear anything. We are calling upon the other journalists to pick up the spear and do what Karima has done.”

Karima’s family says she will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony which will be held in accordance with Islamic rites and traditions, adding an announcement will be made about a more public memorial service in honor of her life.
