As the class of 2020 celebrates their matric results, Al Aqsa High School and the Nurul Islam Girls School in Lenasia has achieved a 100% pass rate.

The matrics of 2020 not only had to contend with long-term infrastructure backlogs but with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The class of 2020 has achieved a 76.2 percent pass rate – this is a 5.1% decline from the previous year.

The Free State was the top-performing province, followed by Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Speaking to Radio Islam Al Aqsa principal says despite the challenges, Al Aqsa High School has done exceptionally well.

“Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah and the duas and support of the community we have achieved a 100% rate, 92% of which were bachelor passes. We had five learners with full houses of seven distinctions each. Two of our learners got aggregates of 92% and above.”

Apa Moosa says one learner will also be honoured with an award by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

“Alhamdulillah one of our learners Mohammed Riyad Ali has been invited by the MEC to an awards function where he will be honoured as one of the top learners in Gauteng.”

An emotional Apa Moosa says Al Aqsa had a moto that it shared with the matric class of 2020 to motivate them.

“Be the victor, not the victim, because our kids were feeling that they were almost a victim of their circumstance and this proves to us that they rose above it. The other thing was a nazam that one of our teachers put together and it went ‘Shukran, Ya Rabbi Shukran’ and that’s where we are today. We are so grateful to our Lord for having given us this honour and for everyone for their duas.”

At the same time Nurul Islam Girls school in Lenasia also achieved a 100% pass rate.

Principal Apa Radiyya Laher says the learners in her school have also done well.

“Our girls have achieved a 100% rate, we are very proud of them and wish them well for the future With the challenging year that we had with COVID, it’s been an achievement and an outstanding achievement. We had seven bachelor passes out of our ten learners and we have three top achievers.”

Apa Laher has paid tribute to all the matrics in the community.

“We wish you well for the future, we know that you will make something and you will do something with this matric pass and everyday that goes forward, take it as a new day, work forward and strive for excellence.”

Meanwhile, Parliament applauded the Class of 2020, saying that despite a decline in the pass rate from last year,  the matric had made the nation extremely proud.
