South Africa has received the first delivery of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
In a statement, Presidency spokesperson Phumla William says the vaccine has been approved by South African Health Products Authority.
“The consignment will be moved to a secure facility in Gauteng before being distributed overnight to the various vaccine centres in all provinces.”
The South African Medical Association (SAMA) says that it expected the vaccine rollout to begin on Wednesday.
Frontline workers are first in line to receive the jabs, which will be transported to state hospitals under military guard.
South Africa halted the AstraZeneca vaccine after preliminary trial data showed that it offered minimal protection against mild to moderate illness from the coronavirus variant dominant in the country.
The Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine has shown an 85% efficacy against severe or critical cases of COVID-19.
