After weeks of persistent heavy rain, the Vaal Dam Reservoir Forum’s Jacques Jansen van Vuuren has confirmed that the Vaal Dam is 100% full.

Van Vuuren was speaking to Radio Islam on Tuesday about the replenishment dams across the country.

The Integrated Vaal River System which is the country’s largest provides water to Gauteng, the Free State, North West and Mpumalanga.

Van Vuuren says the dam reached its 100% capacity about 5pm on Monday.

“The good news is the Vaal is now at 100%. All the other major dams in the Vaal area, Grootdraai which is upstream in the vicinity of Standerton is 105.1%. The emergency reservoir at Sterkfontein which is in the Drakensburg that’s now 96.6% and the Bloemhof Dam which is downstream from the Vaal is at 102.9%.”

Van Vuuren says the heavy rainfall was expected in the country during this time of the year.

“We are a summer rainfall area. Our major catchment is upstream, like I said Standerton area that’s where most of our water comes from. The good rains is not unexpected. Of course, we had the tropical cyclone, the effect of those which gave us more water than normal, so it’s been a very wet season. I’ve been in touch with a number of farmers in the area, they are all very happy.”

Van Vuuren says there is a possibility of more rain in the coming days.
