As Palestine gears up for elections, questions have been raised about who will succeed current president Mahmoud Abbas.
It has been fifteen years since the last Palestinian elections.
In a recent announcement, Abbas decreed that the elections will be held in July and August.
The Palestine Information Networks (PIN) Hafez Ebrahim Moosa says it will be a hotly contested election.
“The question now emerging is on who the candidates particularly for the presidential elections will be., who will succeed Mahmoud Abbas. Various names are being bandied about from the within the Fatah movement. But once again, the name of Marwan Barghouti the popular Fatah leader who is being held for twenty years in Israeli detention so far serving five sentences. He has once again been thrown up as a potential presidential candidate.”
Hafez Moosa says Barghouti’s candidacy has not been officially confirmed by his family.
“Marwan Barghouti is often described by some Palestinians as the Palestinian Mandela and he’s viewed as one of the strongest leadership candidates to succeed Abbas.”
Hafez Moosa also touched on stories about the Israeli occupation razing a masjid which was under construction in the town of Umm Qusah south of Hebron, and several structures in the occupied West Bank and a potential Facebook policy change that could effectively censor Palestinian voices.
