As the country prepares to receive the first batch AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from the Serum Institute in India, South Africans will have to register if they want to receive a dose of the vaccine.
Business Insider Journalist Luke Daniel was speaking to Radio Islam on Monday about the rollout process which is expected to start in about three weeks.
South Africa will take delivery of 1 million doses for now and is expecting another 500,000 next month.
Daniel says there is a registration process to get vaccinated.
“So it’s a six step process from self-enrollment and it’s connected to the EVDS which is the Electronic Vaccination Data System which is expected to go live this week. It will follow a registration process where you will fill out a form, directed to your nearest vaccination site closest to your place of residence or place of work. The vaccine will be administered and all of that data will be captured on the EVDS to be tracked by government.”
Daniel says the COVID-19 vaccine will be administered on a phased approach and not a “first come first served basis.”
“There are three phases. The first phase which we are in now will be the frontlines healthcare workers. So a lot of the details will be ironed out during this first phase. From our understanding the EVDS, the self-registration platform is only open at the moment to healthcare workers. But it’s expected to open up to other people in phase two and phase three when it opens up to the broader population.”
Daniel says it seems almost certain that medical aids will cross subsidise the rollout of the COVID-19 Vaccine.
