The Constitutional Court has ordered former President Jacob Zuma to appear and give evidence before the state capture commission.
The apex court handed down judgement in the urgent application on Thursday the commission approached the court last year following Zuma’s refusal to cooperate with the inquiry, Chaired By Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
Zuma has been directly and indirectly implicated in state capture through his association with the Gupta family and its businesses by various witnesses.
In a statement issued by the Constitutional Court, Justice Chris Jafta says Zuma had been ordered to obey all summons issued by the commission and that he must appear and give evidence.
“It is declared that Mr Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma does not have the right to remain silent in proceedings before the commission. It is declared that (he) is entitled to all privileges under section 3, sub 4 of the Commission’s Act, including the privilege against self-incrimination.”
The Constitutional Court further ordered the former president to obey all directives issued by the commission and ruled that he did not have the right to remain silent in proceedings before the commission.
