Joe Biden has been inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States entering the White House and taking over a nation deeply divided, with economic anguish and an unrelenting pandemic.

Biden took the oath of office on Wednesday during a scaled-down inauguration due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 400,000 people in the US.

Kamala Harris also took the oath of office, making history as the first black and female vice-president in the history of the United States.

Earlier outgoing President Donald Trump left the White House for the final time, skipping Biden’s inauguration as the 46th President of the US.

Biden says there is renewed hope for America after Trumps tumultuous four years in office.

“This is America’s day. This is democracy’s day. A day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve, through a crucible. For the ages, America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge. Today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy.”

Biden says the will of the people has been heard and  heeded.

“We’ve learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile. At this hour my friends, democracy has prevailed.”

Biden is calling on Americans to overcome their divisions, declaring in his first address in office that “without unity, there is no peace.”

“To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy, unity, unity.”

At 78-years-old Biden is the oldest president to be inaugurated.
