As South Africa prepares to enter the new year, the country has recorded the highest number of COVID-19 infections with 18,000 cases reported in a single day on Thursday.
The Health Ministry says the latest cases published have pushed the known number of infections since the start of the outbreak to 1,057,161.
Another 436 people have also died after contracting the virus.
These latest fatalities bring the national death toll to 28,469
The ministry says the recovery rate currently stands 83.0 % meaning that 879,671 people who have recuperated.
South Africa currently stand at number 17 globally in terms of the number of Coronavirus infections worldwide.
