Esteemed Islamic scholar Ml Ebrahim Bham has stressed the importance of respecting your parents, emphasizing that a person should not even say “oof” to their mother and father.

A harsh and cruel reality of the world we live in is the utter contempt and disrespect we show our parents, a horrendous habit that has become prevalent and rife in many societies including among the Muslim community.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) continuously indicated the importance of parents.

Ml Bham says Allah says that we need to be good to our parents all the time, but especially when they become old and we have to look after them.

“Here is a test. Many a times you see people saying ‘that my father has become very difficult. You know how he speaks, sometimes he so demeaning to me, he doesn’t take into account how much I am doing for him.’ Now many a times we say ‘he became old, ill-tempered, short-tempered.’ What do you expect people to do when they become old? They are going to change, their temperament is going to change. People do not remain the same when they are young compared to when they become old. That is a test and a difference between our values and the values of others,”

Ml Bham says people are quick to just shove their parents into an old age home to alleviate the burden they have to carry.

“Other people tell us ‘look at your own interests, look at your own benefits, look at what is supposed to be good for you and if they become very burdensome put them in an old age home.’ What Islam tells us, no, no, now is the time for you to gain reward, now is time for you to get Jannat.”

Ml Bham quoted a hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) attaching the importance to parents.

“Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) said ‘May that persons nose be rubbed into the dust, may he be disgraced, may he be humiliated.’ The Sahaba (RA) asked ‘Oh Nabi of Allah, who are you speaking about in such a way?’ Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) said: ‘That person who finds one or both of his parents in old age and he doesn’t gain Jannat by serving them.’”

Ml Bham says Allah says children should never every say even “oof” to their parents in anger and disrespect, adding that today’s kids cannot take care of  their parents who took care of them when they were young.
