The Gauteng Health Department says it is deeply concerned about people breaking and violating COVID-19 protocols.

The department says video footage have been circulating on social media showing young people partying in large numbers with little or no adherence to the prevention of the spread of the Coronavirus.

Spokesperson Thabo Masebe says the acting premier of Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the irresponsible behaviour, which increases the risk and spread of COVID-19.

“Large gatherings and parties are known to be super-spreaders of COVID-19 and must be avoided. As the country is now in the second wave with a sharp increase in new cases driven by a recently discovered new variant of COVID-19, it is absolutely necessary for all us to play our part to stop the spread of the virus.”

Masebe says those found to be violating the COVID-19 protocols will face the full might of the law.

“Law enforcement agencies and other relevant institutions will be out in full force to enforce compliance with National Disaster regulations. Joint operations including road blocks, inspection of retail stores, restaurants and bars will continue throughout the province during the festive season. Tough action will be taken against anyone breaking the law.”

Masebe says adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions including the wearing of masks, social distancing, sanitizing and hygiene remain the most effective tools in the protection against the virus.
