The owner of the Firefly Travel Guy blog says Geocaching can be a fun way to keep people, families and even children entertained this festive season as the country goes through a muted holiday period.

Jonker Fourie was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about Geocaching which he says “uses multi-billion Dollar satellite technology to find Tupperware in the forest.”

Worldwide Geocaching seems to be really taking off as its helping merge the tech world and nature together.

Fourie says Geocaching is basically a treasure hunt game that can be played on a mobile phone.

He says the game has been around for about twenty years and started in Seattle in the US when the then president allowed the world to use GPS technology for more accurate location.

“It’s facilitated by a group in Seattle in America called the Geocaching HQ and its played by everybody all over the world. There’s about just over three million of these caches that are hidden in just about every country you can think of and anybody can play it. So it’s not just for the rich or famous.”

Fourie says the entire world plays the same game and is not limited to specific countries.

“You start off by going to the website www.geocaching.com and on there you create your profile. You than download the app onto your phone and then you play it with your phone. You open up the app, have a look at the map, it will show you where there are some of these caches around you.”

Fourie says while there are no prizes to be won when finding caches, it does encourage people and families to be more active in their surroundings and discover something new instead of being cooped up in their homes.

The Geocaching app is available for both Android and iOS devices.
