A graduate of Darul Uloom Zakariyya in Johannesburg, South Africa, Imam Mohammad “Yasir” Khan has been appointed the first ever chaplain of the California State Assembly in the United States.

California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon made the announcement on Monday.

The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) says Khan is the first-ever Muslim chaplain appointed to the California Legislature, and potentially the first Muslim chaplain for any state legislature in the United States.

In an exclusive interview with Radio Islam on Thursday, Ml Khan says he is ecstatic by his appointment, but it was only with Allah’s permission that he achieved the post.

“I remind myself and I envision myself hoping that the types of congratulations, mubaraks and everything that I received regarding this position that Allah (SWT) allows me to receive such congratulations. It makes me amongst those people which Allah (SWT) says: May Allah bless us with real success of the Akhirah. In this world you can become whatever you want, but if Allah is not keen with you, Allah is not happy with you, than you are totally in distress.”

Ml Khan says he did not apply for this position.

“The state assembly office approached me and I didn’t anticipate to apply for something like this. There was an interview, I made plenty of istikhara, mahura with the Ulama in my area and I decided to take this step and hopefully this will be a good step for the Ummah at large.”

Ml Khan says his role would involve making dua at the beginning of every session of the California State Assembly without having a formal involvement in the session itself.
