Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address nation soon following the Health Department’s announcement that South Africa is experiencing a second wave of COVID-19.

Mkhize says having observed the trends in the past couple of weeks, the department had already sent a letter to MEC’s of all provinces urging them to prepare their respective provinces for a second wave.

He says President Ramaphosa will provide an update to the nation.

“The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), the Presidential Coordinating Council and the cabinet will deliberate on these matters and then of course we will get proper direction of what needs to be done when the president addresses the nation in due course.”

Mkhize says provinces have been requested to provides suggestions on what needs to be done to stop the spread the virus.

” I think it’s important to send a message to all South African that festive seasons are a time for us to relax and enjoy with our families and it’s for us to enjoy. But we need to understand that we have got a responsibility to enjoy with various restraints. These restraints are to make sure that it is not an irresponsible way to enjoy yourself to the detriment of fellow South Africans.”

Mkhize says the second wave situation is concerning and that all South Africans need to play their part in stopping the spread of COVID-19 by wearing the mask, maintaining social distancing and practicing hygiene.
