Renowned Islamic scholar and Radio Islam presenter Ml Sulaimaan Ravat says while the Cybercrimes Bill has serious implications for South Africans, Islam already has its own set of laws in place which determines the consequences of slandering others.

Ml Ravat was sharing some Islamic insight on the Cybercrimes Bill following an interview with the CEO of World Wide Worx Arthur Goldstuck who echoed the severity of consequences people face for violating the bill including facing stiff fines and lengthy jail terms.

Ml Ravat says leading community figures and even Islamic scholars have borne the brunt of unsubstantiated public ire.

“These things happen in the community and people’s lives are destroyed. Now a days, especially when it comes to community leaders, ‘oh it’s an Aalim, he earns so much salary, or he did this or that, he got this kind of a passport,’ and we just forward, forward, forward. Perhaps we know that community leaders in particular Ulama won’t just necessarily go the route of legal action.”

However, Ml Ravat advises that Allah is watching.

“On the day of Qiyamah, there’ll be a book that’ll be there, it will record every message that you forwarded because you are defaming the person, you are slandering that person, you are backbiting that person. You’ll have to account for in the court of Allah.”

Ml Ravat emphasized what others tech experts have always stressed on,  which is that digitally messages and posts can be traced leaving the first person who shared the post with a false sense of reality that he just pulled off a great escape or the cat that got the cream.
