The editor of The African Mirror says South Africans have lost all fear of law enforcement officials.
In an opinion piece, Jovial Rantao takes the example of a group of armed robbers who in broad daylight stormed an armored car transporting cash right outside the Dobsonville police station.
This brazen attack, right in front of a police station, points to a growing problem in South Africa.
Rantao says if a country’s citizens do not respect its laws, it can lead to chaos.
“Citizens in a constitutional democracy like South Africa do not respect the law, do not fear the law. We have huge problems, this is why these criminals, they did not even see the police station. This symbol of law and order, to them it does not even exist.”
Rantao South Africa has allowed criminals to continue their acts with impunity.
“We’ve let a culture of no consequences seep into our system and I think it’s time that it stopped.”
Rantao says the fear of the law needs to come back into the hearts people adding that it’s the biggest equaliser between rich and poor because a country’s law holds its citizens accountable for their actions.
