Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Netanyahu, Trump, Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

November 25, 2020

Having normalized relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.  Al Arabiya reports that Nobel laureate, Lord David Trimble, nominated the two on Tuesday.

The winners of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize are set to be announced next October. Netanyahu’s office said “His (Trimble’s) decision to submit Prime Minister Netanyahu’s [and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed’s] candidacy will lead the committee to discuss the issue,”.

The UAE and Israel’s August 13 announcement that they would normalize relations, known as the Abraham Accords, was made official at a trilateral signing ceremony with Bahrain, at the White House, in September. Al Arabiya reports that the UAE and Bahrain were the third and fourth Arab states to make peace with Israel. Sudan had shortly thereafter announced it would follow suit. The first to normalize ties with pariah state Israel, had been Egypt in 1979, with Jordan following in 1994.

According to Al Arabiya, US President Donald Trump who brokered the Abraham Accords, has already been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. His name was put forward by Norwegian lawmaker Christian Tybring-Gjedde.

Netanyahu’s son Yair, meanwhile, tweeted that all of the three should receive the Nobel Peace Prize “for bringing the first peace agreement in the Middle East since 1994.”
