Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile says the illegal land invasion and occupation in the province is a serious problem and a headache for community safety.

Maile was speaking at a Gauteng government briefing on Thursday.

The MEC outlined his portfolios goals, which is part of the implementation of the Growing Gauteng Together 2030 (GGT2030) programme of action.

Illegal land invasion and occupation in the province has been rife with many suburbs affected including Lenasia and Lenasia South.

This influx of illegal informal settlements have put tremendous pressure on municipal services with many of the makeshift structures being illegally connected to the electricity grid or tapping into the water infrastructure.

Resident of suburbs have also had to bear the brunt of volatiles service delivery protests which makes it impossible to leave home affecting those going to work, hospitals, school going children including emergency vehicles leaving or entering the area.

Maile says they have an action plan for illegal informal land occupation

“We are working with the police. We’ve got few eviction orders. We can’t enforce unfortunately now because of the state of disaster management act. So we can’t until we get out this we’ll be able to that.”

In August, Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo told Radio Islam,  the former mayor of the city of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba allowed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to illegally occupy land in Lenasia, Lenasia South and surrounds because he needed the party in order to stay in power.
