Johannesburg Emergency Services  say they will be high alert on Monday night as stormy weather conditions continue to lash parts of the city.

Several roads in the city including the M1 North double decker highway was flooded due to the heavy rain.

The SA Weather Service also issued an advisory to motorists be wary of reduced driving visibility during peak traffic in Gauteng province due to the the thunderstorm warning.

Joburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi says most roads are wet and slippery, urging motorists to exercise caution.

“Try avoid crossing flooded roads since most of the roads have been reported to be flooded, instead use alternative routes. Our residents in our low lying areas, our informal settlements are advised to monitor the water levels and moved to higher ground when it’s safe to do so. Also try and look after the young ones to stay away from draining systems so that we can prevent drowning incidents.”

Mulaudzi says one person has died from the stormy weather.

“We have had once incident of a patient who was struck by lightening in Melville. The patient was confirmed dead on scene.”

Mulaudzi has urged communities contact emergency service in case of any eventuality during the adverse weather conditions.
