Police minister Bheki Cele’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba says although the country has moved to level one of the COVID-19 lockdown, the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic is still viable and prevalent and people should not become complacent.
Themba was speaking to Radio Islam on Wednesday following Cele’s address at a media briefing in Pretoria on law enforcement under level one lockdown.
Cele has given a stern warning to those who break level one lockdown regulations, especially with regards to the sale of alcohol and ignoring curfew regulations.
Themba says as the days get warmer, the police are aware that more people are going to be relaxed under the current lockdown level.
“So there is that attitude that people think that the virus is no longer with us or it doesn’t pose as much of a threat as it did a couple of months back. But this is not true. We heard the president pronouncing the fact that if we do not comply with the rules that are still in place, which is to wear your mask, to practice social distancing, to be responsible for your own life, we might have a second wave of this pandemic.”
Themba says although the country is on the lowest level, the police will be on high alert.
“We are already seeing transgressions throughout the country especially when it comes to liquor outlets. Your listeners should also be aware that people think they can socialise inside their houses because of this curfew than give them this green light to go on until the early hours of the morning. But, taking in mind, that we’ve also received a lot of complaints from metros of noise pollution.”
Themba says Cele also raised concerns about gender-based violence saying that while the country is on the line defeating COVID-19, the same could not be said of the second pandemic, GBV.
