The widow of Western Cape top cop Charl Kinnear says her family still needed police protection following a previous threat against them.
The lieutenant-colonel was shot and killed outside his Bishop Lavis home on Friday.
It’s understood that Kinnear’s killer fled the scene on foot.
Kinnear was involved in investigations into several high profile cases relating to the gang underworld.
Speaking to Radio Islam on Monday, his 47-year-old wife Nicolette Kinnear says that they had always been worried about their safety and wanted police protection of her family to continue.
Nicolette says Charl was assassinated because he refused to become a corrupt cop and stood firmly for what he believed in and the oath that he took.
“Yes we would. Because until whoever were the perpetrators behind the initial attack with the hand grenade, we don’t know who it was or what was the intention why. So until all those questions have been answered, we cannot make decisions. At this stage we are assuming that the target was my husband.”
Police Minister Bheki Cele this weekend visited the Kinnear family in Cape Town.
Nicolette says the family told Cele they want answers about Charl’s murder.
“I am not having my husband’s death just go down as another statistic. What I appreciated and I also told the minister the honesty that he admitted that they had failed us as a family and that SAPS had failed the colonel. I was very grateful for that because the last thing that my sons and I need to hear on Saturday morning was more lies.”
Nicolette says her husband was a “gentle giant” who lived for his job and loved making a difference in his community and broader South Africa.
Meanwhile, Forensics for Justice has offered a R1 million cash reward in exchange for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who arranged the murder of Charl Kinnear.
