Just more than a month after a huge explosion destroyed the port facilities in Beirut, Lebanon, a massive fire is again raging at the port.
Al Jazeerah reports that there is no immediate information about what had caused Thursday’s fire.
According to the Lebanese army the blaze was at a warehouse where oil and tyres were stored. Firefighters are at the scene and military helicopters are trying to extinguish the fire.
Employees from companies with offices near the port have evacuated.
Reuters meanwhile reports that the head of Lebanon’s civil defense has urged residents to stay calm, saying the fire was contained in one area. While there were no immediate reports of injuries, some residents, still traumatized by the August blast, drove out of the city.
Some 191 people were killed and more than 3000 wounded in Beirut in early August, when 2,750 tonnes of stored ammonium nitrate exploded.
