Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to provide an update to the nation about the current COVID-19 status in the country and possibly move the country to level one of the lockdown.

Mkhize was speaking to Radio Islam on Wednesday about the battle with the coronavirus and the slowing down of the number of infections.

Mkhize says while June and July were the worst months as predicted by the Health Department’s COVID-19 models, the country is over the infections surge.

The Health Minister says the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) was very pleased to see there was no increase in the number of infections of COVID-19 when the country moved from level 3 to level 2 of the lockdown.

He says this may be an opportunity for the President to move the country to level one lockdown and closer to normal activities.

“We hope that we can still contain the numbers. The past two weeks have been very encouraging with no upsurge, which we hope that if we go to the next level lower, we still discussing all of those issues. The president will come out in the next few days and gives us a sense of direction, but we will be preparing for people to start easing from the next level and when that has been announced, we will move to that level, but it’s not decided yet.”

Mkhize has thanked all South Africans for their support in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

“We want to thank all South Africans for taking heed of our precautionary measures. We think they would’ve made a contribution, the use of masks, the hand sanitizing, washing of hands and distancing assisted quite a lot in containing the infection.”

Mkhize however says South Africa is not yet “out of the woods” as the coronavirus infection may surge again like it did in Spain, the US, Iran and South Korea among other countries.
