The Regional Director for the South African Revenue Services (SARS) says about 3.2 million people have received notifications of auto assessments from the tax collector.

The  procedures for the 2020 tax  year is slightly different from previous years as there have been major changes with more people working from home including how COVID-19 impacted on taxpayers.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Fareed Khan says Sars has been spent a lot of money in increasing and expanding the use of data.

Khan says Sars has received one hundred and forty million pieces of data from employers, banking institutions, medical aids and international organizations among others to raise an assessment and provide an estimate on tax returns.

He says a number of individual would have received an auto assessment.

“Generally these are taxpayers who are earning a salary, they are getting income from a third party. So it wouldn’t include business people who run operative businesses.”

Khan says people who earn a salary but did not get a self-assessment SMS should not be worried.

“That means basically that Sars is not able to assess you of self-assess you. So you will be able to submit your taxes after you’ve completed your return from the 1st of September.”

Khan says taxpayers who are not happy with the rebate provided by Sars after the auto assessment, there is an opportunity for them to edit their return.
