No Protests for Mali until after Eid

July 22, 2020

Mali’s opposition movement has announced plans that all protests in the country will be postponed until after the Eid-ul Adha festivities.

Africa News reports that the group’s leaders have decided to withhold all activates till the end of July, saying this is not a show of weakness, but respect for the first 10 days of the month of Zul-Hijjah, sacred to all Muslims. Zul-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month on the lunar, Islamic, calendar.

One of the main leaders of the movement, Choguel Maïga, is still demanding President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, step down. This is despite Keita having given in to a number of key demands.

A mediation team is expected to arrive in Mali on Thursday. The president of Niger Mahamadou Issoufou is part of the team, as is Côte d’Ivoire’s Alassane Ouattara, July 23.

Meanwhile, mediators from the Economic Community of West African States had proposed a unity government to end the crisis in Mali, which had recently been largely violent. The proposition had been rejected outright by the opposition.
