Migrants Drown Trying to Enter Turkey

July 21, 2020

60 bodies have been pulled out of Lake Van in Turkey by Turkish rescue teams. At least two children were reported to be among the dead. A boat carrying migrants had sunk in the lake almost three weeks ago.

The migrants had been crossing the lake on a fishing boat while trying to enter Turkey, to avoid police checkpoints on the highways. The New York Times reports that the boat, which was carrying 80 people, had overturned late at night on June 27.

The death toll has since climbed. Thirteen bodies were found in the lake soon after the accident, before the wreckage was located. According to an Afghan embassy official twenty-five of the dead were Afghan, with others suspected to have been Pakistani, and Iranian.

One of the men accused of trying to ferry the migrants across the lake, Medeni Akbas, seems to be the only survivor. Akbas and four other people have been arrested. Warrants have been issued for 17 more. His statement says a relative, Servet Akbas, who is still among the missing, had asked him to join him in smuggling the migrants across the lake. He said he was offered $110 to watch over the boat’s engine and to break up fights among the passengers. According to the NYT, Servet had been steering the boat when a wave hit it and overturned it. Passengers were flung into the water, with some having become trapped under the hull.

Akbas held on to one of the migrant’s bags to stay afloat. Servet was with him but died.

Lanna Walsh, spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration in Turkey said, “People are still trying, and they always will whether there is a pandemic or not.”
