Would you drink Cockroach Milk?
This may be squeamish for some, but recent articles have stated that the new upcoming super food is cockroach milk.
The drink is a protein-rich substance that female Pacific beetle cockroaches feed their young.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Dr Oluwafemi Adebo a senior food Technology/food science domain at the university of Johannesburg says researchers investigated the quality of cockroach milk to find out if it was more nutritious.
“It was interesting to find out that it was actually way better, especially from a nutritional point of view as compared to your cow milk and compared to your premium milk, buffalo milk and the likes.”
Adebo says the findings by researches is not surprising as eating insects is some country including South Africa is a delicacy.
“Insects have been with us for quite some time. Since time immemorial we’ve been eating insects, especially in some countries they basically can’t do without it and you have countries here in Africa that do so. Here in South Africa Mopani worms is a delicacy in Limpopo.”
Adebo says there are reports that it takes approximately one thousand cockroaches to produce just one glass of cockroach milk.
