South Africans are losing trust in government’s ability to lead during COVID-19 pandemic.

Anxiety is rising as we see u-turns on regulations and a deepening economic crisis.

The Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Professor of Practice in the Johannesburg Business School College of Business and Economics and author of the best selling book, Lift As You Rise, Bonang Mohale, in his latest opinion piece states that a great deal of foundational work was already done before the pandemic.

Mohale  says despite the number of pandemic’s the country is facing, President Cyril Ramaphosa is doing a good job leading the country.

“He is absolutely trying under the most difficult circumstances. What we seem to be good at is to develop plans, but the execution could be better. It was General George Paton who said: ‘great wars are won by good execution, not great plans.’ Because good execution will save even a mediocre plan.”

Mohale says if the COVID-19 has taught us a lesson, it is to save and preserve lives.

“If you think about it, a nation and a society that laments the loss of the economy more than the loss of life, actually does not need a pandemic. It is already sick.”

Mohale says in order to build trust and restore confidence among South Africans, it’s time for the strongest elements of planned strategies to work together and complement each other.
