30-Year-Old Dies after Attending ‘Covid Party’ in the US

July 13, 2020

A doctor in San Antonio, in Texas, said one of the patients at the hospital where she works, died after attending a ‘Covid party.’ According to The Guardian, a “Covid party” is an event held by somebody diagnosed with a novel coronavirus infection, to see if the virus is real and to see if anyone gets infected.

Dr. Jane Appleby, chief medical officer for the Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital, said the patient had attended the ‘Covid party’ because he thought that the coronavirus pandemic was a hoax. She added, “He thought he was young, and he was invincible and wouldn’t get affected.”

According to The Guardian, many of the guests at the so called ‘Covid parties’ compete to see who could catch the virus first. In Alabama, college students reportedly gambled to gift the money to the ‘winner’.

Appleby said she is seeing an increased amount of coronavirus patients in their 20’s and 30’s, some of whom were critically ill. She said, “I don’t want to be an alarmist, and we’re just trying to share some real-world examples to help our community realize that this virus is very serious and can spread easily.”

Texas, last week, exceeded 10,000 new cases in a single day. It was also the deadliest week of the pandemic in the state, with 95 new deaths having been reported on Friday. Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus infections in the United States stands at 3. 37 million, with 137 000 associated deaths.
