With the South African Weather Service warning South Africans to brace for another intense cold front making landfall on Thursday, Eskom has urged the public to reduce electricity or it will have to implement load reduction.

In a statement, Eskom  says the power generation system is still severely constrained.

The  power utility says one generation unit each at the Kendal and Tutuka power stations tripped, adding to the Tutuka unit that tripped on Tuesday evening.

It says technicians are working around the clock to return these units to service.

“While the Medupi unit that tripped yesterday evening has been successfully returned to service today, the power generation system remains constrained. Any additional breakdowns will compromise Eskom’s ability to supply the country through the peak demand period of 17:00 – 21:00.”

Eskom  says the load reduction may persist through the weekend.
