Kenya Scraps the School Year

July 07, 2020

All schools in Kenya are only to reopen in 2021. Kenya’s Ministry of Education said that all students would resume studies in their current grades, next year. The school year was scrapped in Kenya as a result of the spread of the coronavirus in the East African country.  Kenya currently has over 8,000 confirmed cases of the virus.

National end of year examinations, which are usually held in October and November, will not be held for primary and secondary pupils in 2020.

Education Minister George Magoha said that colleges and universities, however, would re-open in September this year, but that strict coronavirus protocols would be enforced.

The BBC reports that Kenya recorded its first coronavirus case in March, and that schools closed shortly thereafter. On Monday, the Ministry of Education was given 24 hours to present guidelines regarding the school calendar.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta, also on Monday, reopened the borders to three counties that had been closed as part of the lockdown. Movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties was lifted as of 04H00 on Tuesday. Kenya’s night-time curfew, however, is to remain in place for a further 30 days.
