The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 168,061.
This is an increase of 8,728 from Wednesday’s announcement.
The number of deaths has also increased by 95 bringing the total to 2,844.
The Western Cape has the most infections with 65,841 followed by Gauteng at 49,937, Eastern Cape at 30,603, KwaZulu-Natal 11,669, Free State 1,886, North West 4,788, Mpumalanga 1,478, Limpopo 1,286, Northern Cape 573 and unallocated infections 0.
The total number of recoveries to date is 81,999, which translates to a recovery rate of 48,8%.
Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,706,127 this is an increase of 39,188 which were done in the last 24 hours.
“Regrettably, we report a further 95 COVID-19 related deaths- 12 from Eastern Cape, 38 from Gauteng, 16 from KwaZulu Natal and 29 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 2,844. The mortality rate is 1,7%.”
Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
