Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the ‘COVID-19 storm’ has arrived in the province which could necessitate the reintroduction of stricter lockdown regulations.
Makhura was providing an update on the COVID-19 pandemic in the province which has seen a surge in infections over the past few weeks sparking fears that the province may be well on its way to becoming the epicentre of the pandemic.
The premier says Gauteng now has the largest number of active cases at more than 3,000 new cases daily.
Makhura says provincial government will continue to push for ‘behavioural change’, but the worst is yet to come.
“We think there may be a case for harder localized lockdown in areas where the infection rate is getting out of hand and people are not observing the measure being put in place.”
Gauteng accounts for the second highest number of Coronavirus cases in the country with over 45,000 infections and 244 deaths.
