The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) shadow minister of Health in Gauteng says the province already has more active COVID-19 cases than the Western Cape.
There are indications that Gauteng will take over from the Western Cape to become the new epicenter of COVID-19.
According to the Health Department, South Africa’s confirmed COVID-19 cases now stand at 144,264, an increase of more than 6,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
Gauteng currently has 39,841 confirmed Coronavirus cases as of yesterday.
The DA’s shadow minister of Health in the province Jack Bloom says Gauteng will soon over take the Western Cape.
“Gauteng is already the epicentre for South Africa. There’s been a very high rate of recoveries in the Western Cape with more than 60%, whereas the recoveries in Gauteng are quite low because in the last two weeks, everything’s just doubled and then doubled again. So it’s certainly accelerating.”
Bloom says there are concerns there may not be enough beds to accommodate those infected with COVID-19,
“The whole idea of the lockdown was just to spread out the number of infections. The question is do we have enough hospital beds, that’s the real issue. Did we use the lockdown to best effect to prepare for the inevitable unfortunate increase in infections?”
Bloom says according to Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku, there is no indication of when the peak of COVID-19 will hit the province.
