COVID-19 Infections Spike to 80,412, Deaths Rise to 1,674

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 80,412.

This is an increase of 4,078 from Tuesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 49 bringing the total to 1,674

The Western Cape has the most infections with 46,555 followed by Gauteng at 14,620, Eastern Cape at 11,919, KwaZulu-Natal 4,238, Free State 608, North West 1,402, Mpumalanga 391, Limpopo 416, Northern Cape 211 and unallocated infections 52.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,200,736 this is an increase of 28,202 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 49 COVID-19 related deaths- 6 from Eastern Cape and 43 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1674. The mortality rate is 2.1%

Mkhize says government also recognises that the number of recoveries continues to rise as well, with the total number to date at 44 331.

“This translates to a recovery rate of 55.1%. Therefore, we currently have 34 407 active cases.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
