It is alleged that Gangs in the Western Cape are opening security companies as a front to get firearms. This is the warning from criminologist Dr Guy Lamb.
He was reacting after illegal security practitioners were brought to book in a joint operation with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the SAPS.
PSIRA made about 46 arrests in one week which then lifted the lid on illegal practices in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. During the past few weeks, PSIRA has been chasing non-compliant businesses and security officers, mainly in major cities.
Speaking to Radio Islam, criminologist Dr Guy Lamb says Corruption plays a part here as well.
“The problem we had a few years ago was that there were a few corrupt individuals in the firearm registry. There’s been court cases and those individuals have been convicted of corruption.”
Dr Lamb says there is a long history to this situation.
