COVID-19 Deaths Jump to 312, Infections Spike to 17,200

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 17,200

This is an increase of 767 from Monday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 26 bring the total to 312

The Western Cape has the most infections with 10,639, followed by Gauteng at 2,361, KwaZulu-Natal 1,616, Free State 168, North West 72, Mpumalanga 78, Limpopo 94, Eastern Cape 2,135, Northern Cape 37 and unallocated infections 0.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 488,609 this is an increase of 13,538 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably we report a further 26 COVID-19 related deaths- this brings the total national deaths to 312. Sadly, Northern Cape has reported its first death. We are however encouraged by the rising number of recoveries which now stands at 7,960.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families and appreciation to the health workers who treated the patients.
