Umrah to Remain Suspended During Ramadan

April 09, 2020

It’s emerged that Umrah during the blessed month of Ramadan will remain suspended as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia battles to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Haramain Sharifain which shares news from Saudi Arabia tweeted on Thursday that according to a source close to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, international Umrah will not take place in the month of fasting.

Saudi Arabia has recorded 327 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of active cases to 2,450, and 3,122 since the beginning of the outbreak.

So far 631 patients have recovered while 41 have died.

The Kingdom suspended Umrah in February amid the spread of the Coronavirus in the country including implementing curfews in a number of a cities including Makkah and Medina.

While it’s unclear if Hajj 1441/2020 will be cancelled, earlier this month, Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Minister Dr. Muhammad Saleh Benten urged Muslims from all countries to wait until there is more clarity about COVID-19 before confirming hajj contracts for 2020.

Sheikh Benten said while Saudi Arabia is fully ready to serve pilgrims there were concerns about the Coronavirus.

At the same time the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) says while they have filled the current hajj quota and completed all internal processes, they are waiting for information about whether hajj 2020 will be cancelled or not.
