Priminister Narendra Modi has reacted with defiance to the widespread protests against the citizenship amendment bill. This law will offer citizenship to three non-Muslim countries from nearby.
This bill has been criticized as a start to creating India as a Hindu state, while the Bharatiya Janta Party ( BJP) has stated that people will be protected from prosecution.
Adding to the fears is a government announcement that it plans to carry out a widespread exercise to weed out “infiltrators” from Neighbouring countries.
Given that this bill relies on extensive documentation to prove that their ancestors live In India, Many Muslims fear that they may be on the same path as the Rohingya Muslims.
Mr Modi said that “ the law will have no effect on citizens of Inda.”
